User Guide - Sharing Texts

Groups are often the easiest way to share texts with other people. You can create groups in eMargin, add texts to groups, and share groups with others using special links which assign group permissions.

Creating a Group

Create a group

To create a group to go Groups in the top menu, then click on Create a Group at the bottom of the page.

To distinguish your group from others we ask for a few details. Enter your Organisation, Department and a name for the group. You can also enter a description will be shown to users when they view the group. When you're ready, click on Create Group.

Sharing a Group

Create a special link for a group

Once the groups has been created you can share the group with other people. Go to the page for your groups and click on Share Group.

Open the drop down menu which says Change this to add a special link.... From the options choose the permissions you would like to give to people who follow the link (permissions details). Then click Update.

Create a special link for a group

A list of active links will be displayed. Copy a link and then give it to the people you would like to join the group (for example, you could email it to them). When they follow the link, they will be asked to sign in or create an account in eMargin and will then be added to the group with the permissions you specified.

You can also turn off links if you would no longer like anyone to use them. Just change Keep active to Remove for those you wish to turn off, then click Update.

Managing Members

You can change the permissions for each member of the group. From the group's page, click on Members. You will see a list of members. To change a user's permissions change their access level in the drop down menu, then click Update.

Adding Texts

From a group's page you can add texts either by clicking Upload a Text or Add Existing Texts. The first option allows you to upload a new text. The second option will show a list of texts to which you have access, tick the texts you would like to add to the group then click the Add button.

Permissions

There are 5 access levels for users when accessing groups and texts.

  • Block - the user cannot access the group/text
  • Read Only - the user can read but not make annotations
  • Contribute - the user can make annotations (this is a good default for students)
  • Moderate - the user can delete annotations, comments and tags made by others
  • Administrate - the user can alter the group/text's details, change user access and turn on/off annotation features

It is therefore possible for users with Moderate or Administrate permission levels to act as moderators for their own texts and groups. Otherwise annotations and comment threads are not moderated, neither automatically nor by RDUES. However, if you or others contact RDUES about inappropriate conduct or content within eMargin, then we will investigate on a case-by-case basis.
